Blumhouse Productions has officially confirmed that Octavia Spencer will reprise her chilling role in Ma 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 cult horror hit. The film is currently in early development, with director Tate Taylor also returning as producer.
Though Ma initially received mixed reviews, the movie quickly earned a cult following — thanks largely to its viral presence on social media. The image of Sue Ann luring teenagers into her basement parties became a meme sensation, helping the film reach a new generation of horror fans. Now, Spencer is set to revisit the unhinged character of Sue Ann Ellington, whose fate was left deliberately ambiguous at the end of the first movie.
“Octavia and I always knew there was more to explore with Sue Ann,” Taylor told Entertainment Weekly.” This time, we want to take her into a new environment, one where her past may come back to haunt her — or empower her.”
What to Expect from Ma 2
While full plot details remain under wraps, early reports suggest that Ma 2 may follow Sue Ann as she relocates to a new town, possibly working as a real estate agent with a deadly side hustle. “We joked about Sue Ann becoming this charming real estate agent who sells beautiful homes — but what she does inside them is another story,” Taylor teased.
Blumhouse founder Jason Blum credits fan demand for reviving interest in the franchise. “Every Halloween, we see the memes, the costumes, the quotes from Ma,” Blum told Empire Online. “It became clear that audiences weren’t done with this character — and neither were we.”
Blumhouse is aiming for a Halloween 2025 release, positioning Ma 2 as one of next year’s most talked-about horror offerings. There is no official trailer yet, though fan-made teasers are already circulating online. Fans can expect the first real footage to drop later this summer.
