Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially returning for a darker, practical reboot of The Mummy, directed by the Ready or Not team Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project won’t serve as a direct sequel or a simple remake. Instead, it’s described as a reimagining of the franchise’s spirit — practical effects over heavy CGI, a focus on real-world danger, and a tone that blends classic adventure with atmospheric horror.
“We’re not remaking it — we’re rediscovering it. It’s about that sense of discovery, danger, and fun that made the original Mummy special.”
— Brendan Fraser
Rachel Weisz is reportedly reprising her role as Evelyn Carnahan, while Fraser returns as Rick O’Connell, the fearless explorer who first faced off against Imhotep over 25 years ago. The new story is said to explore modern-day Egypt, where ancient cults and hidden tombs resurface in a world that has forgotten its past.

Universal is positioning the film as a fresh beginning for The Mummy saga — one that honors the original trilogy while breathing new life into its mythology. With Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett at the helm, fans can expect a balance of action, mystery, and horror — the cinematic DNA that once defined the franchise.
The film is currently in pre-production, with shooting expected to begin in early 2025. Worldwide release is planned for spring 2026.
