The long-awaited Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, will finally open its doors on September 22, 2026, in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park.
Designed by visionary architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, with gardens by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA, the museum will stand as a futuristic symbol of how storytelling and visual art connect generations.
Exploring the Art of Stories
The museum’s mission is to celebrate illustrated storytelling — from fine art to film. “Stories are mythology,” George Lucas explained, “and when illustrated, they help humans understand the mysteries of life.”
Its vast collection of more than 40,000 works includes classic paintings, murals, comic art, science-fiction illustrations, children’s book art, and cinematic relics such as movie posters and production artifacts.
Each of the 35 galleries will reflect a universal human experience — love, adventure, community, work, childhood, and beyond — turning narrative art into a shared emotional journey.
A Museum for Everyone
“This is a museum of the people’s art,” said co-founder Mellody Hobson. “The images are illustrations of beliefs we live with every day. Our hope is that visitors will see themselves, and their humanity, reflected back.”
The museum’s immersive design and inclusive philosophy echo Lucas’s lifelong commitment to democratizing art — making it accessible to audiences beyond the traditional gallery world.
Beyond Star Wars: A New Cultural Force
Although George Lucas is best known for creating the Star Wars saga, this museum represents something far more personal — his lifelong passion for how images tell stories.
Visitors can expect cinematic exhibitions, documentaries, and behind-the-scenes displays from legendary illustrators and filmmakers.
The Lucas Museum is poised to become a landmark where cinema, art, and imagination converge — a true gift to both storytellers and dreamers.
