Avengers: Endgame may not have been the Iron Man epitaph that we first imagined. Indeed, rumours are flying that Robert Downey Jr. will be making an appearance in next year’s Black Widow movie.

Deadline kicked off the rumour mill by claiming that Iron Man will be making an appearance in Black Widow. This was followed by a fleeting reference in Comic Book who suggested there’s a “good chance” we’ll be seeing a cameo from Downey Jr.

Furthermore, they say that Downey Jr.’s Black Widow role will be made up of deleted scenes from Captain America: Civil War.

Black Widow is the inaugural movie of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), in which we delve into the murky Soviet history of Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff.

The movie, directed by Cate Shortland, has been shot in a host of locations that scream Cold War paranoia (Budapest et al), and there’s an excellent supporting cast. Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz are among those fleshing out the complex world of Natasha Romanoff who, lest we forget, met a premature end in Endgame just like Tony Stark/Iron Man.

So where could Downey Jr.’s iconic MCU character fit in? Were he to make an appearance, it would be a nice inversion of Romanoff’s debut appearance in 2010’s Iron Man 2.

At Comic-Con this summer, Marvel stated that Black Widow takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. This bolsters the suggestion that Civil War’s deleted Iron Man scenes will play a part. Whether we get any flashbacks to Romanoff’s earlier years (alluded to in Avengers Assemble and Avengers: Age of Ultron) remains to be seen.

Weisz has said there are “multiple Black Widows” in the movie, and Harbour has been confirmed as playing Russian superhero Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian.
