MUBI, the global streaming service, production company and film distributor has revealed the first look at Issue 3 of their print-only magazine NOTEBOOK. Created and published by MUBI, the magazine is dedicated to the art and culture of cinema.

Issue 3 is entitled THE FLAP OF A BUTTERFLY’S WINGS, and features thematic pieces devoted to the appearance of weather inside and outside of movies—w(h)e(a)ther cataclysmic or beautiful, documented or created—and to the disruptive ways film culture and industry can be sabotaged. This issue encompasses an exploration of filming in extreme cold in the silent era and today; a tour of an artificial weather effects facility; filmmaker weather diaries; Batgirl and the self-sabotage of Warner Bros. Discovery; a radical manifesto from the unseen film festival worker; Erika Balsom on Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt; and advice on how to render a movie unstreamable. Other highlights include a visual essay following a 16mm film restoration, a behind the scene exploration of 1930s Indian moviemaking; and the inauguration of a new, multi-issue feature called Things a Filmmaker Should Know, with the first installment coming courtesy of Tsai Ming-liang (Days, Goodbye, Dragon Inn).

This new issue follows the release of the Notebook Cannes Special 2023, a limited-edition broadsheet made available exclusively to attendees of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which included interviews with Souleymane Cissé and Alice Rohrwacher, an insider’s guide to the festival, a crossword, a comic, and much more.

NOTEBOOK provides a diverse curation of writing, photographs, original translations, and other unique material to illuminate what makes film exciting, moving, and relevant. With a design-forward approach, featuring renowned international writers and filmmakers and artists who are at the forefront of international cinema, the magazine is a showcase for experimental, reflective, and surprising approaches to film culture. It was recently nominated for a D&AD award for Independent Magazine.

NOTEBOOK magazine is edited by Daniel Kasman and features different and exclusive editorial to the online publication, which launched in 2007 when MUBI was founded. NOTEBOOK is developed, designed and published in-house at MUBI, with Davide Cazzaro serving as the magazine’s Deputy Editor and Publishing Manager and Pablo Martin as Creative Director.

Available starting July 2023, the issue can now be pre-ordered here.
