Mel Gibson is officially moving forward with The Resurrection of the Christ, the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 biblical epic The Passion of the Christ. Lionsgate has acquired distribution rights to the film, which is scheduled to begin principal photography in August 2025 at Cinecittà Studios in Rome and several locations across Southern Italy.
Actor Jim Caviezel will reprise his role as Jesus Christ, using advanced de-aging technology to preserve visual continuity with the original film. The sequel is described as Gibson’s most ambitious project to date and is co-written by Gibson himself, his brother Donal Gibson, and screenwriter Randall Wallace (Braveheart).
From Resurrection to Revelation
The Resurrection of the Christ will cover the time between the resurrection of Jesus and the death of the last apostle. The narrative is said to explore spiritual themes, including the fall of the angels and journeys through other realms, promising a visually and theologically expansive film.
A short 20-second teaser has already been released, featuring the title reveal accompanied by a solemn musical score. While an official release date has not been confirmed, the film is expected to premiere globally around Easter 2026.
Following the immense success of The Passion of the Christ, which grossed over $600 million worldwide, expectations are high for this follow-up. With Lionsgate on board and filming soon underway, The Resurrection of the Christ could become one of the most talked-about religious films of the decade.
