Ingmar Bergman’s dreamlike chronicle of an extended family in early 20th-century Sweden returns to cinemas in time for Christmas.

Drawing heavily on Bergman’s own memories, it is attuned as ever to the anguish of life but there is much that is fondly recalled, from toy theatres and magic lantern shows to family Christmases and favoured relatives.

Fanny and Alexander (1982) 40th anniversary screenings from 2 December 2022
